Hi Janice, Thanks for taking the time to look into this. You found my Prudy/Prudence, and you also found why I'm so stuck.I have no trouble tracing Prudy after she married John Ray in 1861 (the couple are my g-g-g-grandparents). Before 1861, however, Prudy is like a ghost.
All I have to go on are 1870-and-later census records (where she states her parents were born in NC and IN), a NE marriage record for her daughter Mary Jane that lists mother as "Pendy Gather," and a difficult-to-read copy of a 1925 obituary that lists her maiden name as "Gaether," born in Harrisonville, Indiana on August 16, 1841.
Okay, so "Gather" or "Gaether," born in IN with a family line going back to NC.I soon stumbled upon the Gaither family tree, and it all looked so promising...
But I'm stuck.I can't find her anywhere.Prudence Reeves seemed like a clue. She could be a grandmother of my Prudy, or maybe even an aunt.I saw a previous post by Eva Gaither Thornberry where she stated that Prudence and Basil had 12 children- I can only account for 7 of them.Theory 1: Maybe my Prudy is a child of one of the missing 5?Or, theory 2:Prudence is a child from Alvin Gaither's marriage to Cynthy Bowden.I stumbled across a post a while back where someone claimed that Alvin had 3 children with Cynthy: Basil b1837, Prudence b1839, and Liddle (sp?).But I can't find any records to confirm this.
Any thoughts?Have you ever found an 1850 census record for Alvin Gaither?Do you know who the missing children of Prudence and Basil are?Or, theory 3: What do you know about Basil's brother Brice/Bruce (spelling makes it hard to tell which brother)?Brice/Bruce shows up on 1820 Lawrence census and 1830&40 Martin censuses, but I don't know much about his children.
