I am looking for any living relatives of Evelyn Purvis Earle (and the Cooke family of her Grand Mother Elizabeth) who had a column in the Gananoque Reporter. Evelyn lived with her sister in Gananoque and she was apparently rather eccentric. She authored 2 small books, "Linger in Leeds" and "Leeds the Lovely" wherein she mentioned her Grand Mother Elizabeth Cooke who married John Earl in 1851. Elizabeth, born 1831, Brockville, was the sister of my Great Grand Mother (Sarah) Jane Cooke, born 1836, Brockville and they were daughters of Robert and Jane (Griffith) Cooke born Ireland, eloped and emmigrated to Brockville about 1825. Evelyn was my only source of information about my Cooke heritage. I had discovered this Cooke family with the help of Lisa Russel of the Ontario Diocese Archives, in the Records of St Peter's Anglican Church, Brockville. I searched for Robert and Jane and I could not find them in ANY records. Turns out Robert died young and Jane farmed her young family out to Robert's Cooke and Story relatives and left for the USA with an American. She apparently had more children with this unidentified fellow.
Robert and Jane had 2 sons John born 1828 and Joseph 1833. John Married Sally Clark in 1851 while Joseph married Mary Ann White in 1861. Both farmed Concession V Lansdowne near John Earl. Joseph seemed to be a man of many vocations and he died in Rockport. Other known Cookes related to Robert were Richard and Joseph Cooke of Concession IV Lot 8 Augusta.
Cookes who may be related were Old Thomas, born Ireland 1752, living with John Story in 1852 Elizabethtown, John and Son Andrew Cooke of 1852 Elizabethtown and WIlliam Cooke who married Ann Bowles in 1840s ELizabethtown and farmed in South Crosby. I am also trying to establish if our Irish Cookes intermarried with the family of Silas Cook in the same area. J Robert McGinn, great Grand Son of Sarah Jane Cooke McGinn who married John McGinn Dec 6th 1854, Lansdowne.
