A follow up letter was written on General John Garland's family by Harry B. Deas to Spotswood Garland in February of 1900.Spotswood Garland was the son of Hugh Alfred Garland of St. Louis, Missouri.It listed the children of General Garland and his wife Henriette Margaret Smith.

Your address has been given me by the Va. Hist’l Society to whom I wrote regarding the antecendents of my grandfather Gen’l John Garland & Henriette Margaret Smith of Detroit Mich.I have record of a few of these Garlands, children of the General as follows.The General was born on the 15th of Nov, 1793 in Albemarle Co. Va., died in New York City on the 5th of June 1861, buried with Military honors at Oak Hill Cemetery, Georgetown, D.C.His wife died suddenly, August 31st 1860 in Saratoga, NY. (I was there at the time, but a child). Henrietta Virginia Garland (Nichols), b. 28th March 1821 at New Glasgow, Amherst Co. Va., died 5th Nov. 1843 at Pottsville, Pa.; John Spotswood Garland, born Detroit, Mich 28th Nov. 1823, Malvina Ossian Garland, b Detroit, mid July –1817, d Detroit, Mich. mid July; Mary Elizabeth Garland (my dear mother) b. Detroit, Mich. 28th July 1825, died St. Louis, Mo. 27th March 1899. Maria Louise Garland (Mrs Gen’l James Longstreet), born Fort Snelling, upper Mississippi, Mch. 6th 1827, died Gainesville, Ga, Dec, 29th 1889 – David Smith Garland, b. Prairie du Chien 3rd Mch 1829, Hudson Martin Garland, b. New Glasgow, Va. 20th Dec. 1830, died U.S.N in Brooklyn, NY ---, Lewis Cass Garland, b Washington, D.C. 26th May 1833, died Washington, D.C., 3rd Dec. 1840; Chauncey Payne Garland, b. Washington, D.C. July 5th 1835, died Washington, D.C. Dec. 20, 1835.
John Spotswood Garlad married Lt. U.S.A. married Mary Traxler Houston at Washington, D.C. August 24th 1850 by Rd. Mr. Butler.
These people were all my Uncles & Aunts. Perhaps you are my Cousin from Washington, D.C. I am anxious to know all I can of the Ancestors of my Grandfather Gen’l John Garland & my Grandmother Henriette Margaret Smith.Can you guide me in any way?
