In Buckingham County, Va. Nathaniel (Fogg?) Garnett (ca1742-ca1816) patented 64 acres, dated June 1782, on Sam's Creek of Slate River. He married, we believe, Mary Armistead & had: Elizabeth, Armistead, Thomas, John, William, Reuben, Joseph?, Lewis?, & James (b1785). These Garnetts intermarried with the GRAY & COOKE families. [John mrd Sarah Gray; James mrd Mildred Winston Gray; William mrd Mary Joanna Branch Cooke. John had a tract near Willis Mountain, and a cemetery, containing a grave with the initials "TG" is located on what was once Thomas Garnett's. The date on the stone is "d. Apr. 5, 1826".
I have more on Smith & Cooke; email me at jecooke88[AT]hotmail[dot]com.
Also, an individual who descends from Anthony Garnett of Kendal, Westmoreland, UK, is genetically related (distantly) to these Cumberland Smiths. Of further interest is that Robert Smith & Hannah Andrews had a son named "Anthony Garnett Smith".
