Are you familiar with Anna Russell des Cognets' book, "Governor Garrard of Kentucky: His Descendants and Relatives?"Its the first place I look for all things Garrard. There are errors in it, but its still the quintessential place to start.
She has, on pages 22 and 23, a James (No middle name) Garrard, son of General James Garrard and grandson of Governor James Garrard, born August 31st, 1796 at "Fairfield," in Bourbon County, Kentucky.According to Mrs des Cognets, he married a Sarah Reeder in August 1816.She lists eight children for them and also lists their children.
The des Cognets book has been published twice. It was originally published in 1880 by the author and then republished in 1962 by the author's grandson, Louis des Cognets, Jr.
Verbally, Mrs des Cognets work is identical in both versions, however, in the original edition the pictures are interspersed throughout the text whereas they are all collected together in the reprint.Additionally, the reprint provides a much needed index for the original text. Finally, Louis des Cognets added the results of his own research to the second edition in the form of, "A Postscript About the Garrard Family."
Copies of the original version of Mrs des Cognets' book can be obtained from Higginson Book Company (www.higginsonbooks.com).At the home page, search on the surname or look under "G" in the Genealogies section of the main menu. The cost is under $20.00 before postage. The only place I know to find the second edition is through old and rare book dealers (the price is going up, up ,up!) or you may get lucky and find one on eBay.Search titles and text on "Garrard +Cognets."Good luck.
There is a copy of the Governor's direct line from this book posted on the Garrard Family page at MyFamily.com.The text is broken up into 10-12 pages sections to control the file size. This version requires the Adobe Acrobat Reader which can be obtained in many places on the internet at no cost.Membership in the MyFamily.com Garrard page is by invitation only.If you would like to be invited to join, send me your email address and I will arrange it.
I notice that in another book titled "Governor James Garrard" by H. E. Everman, a John Edwards (I'm sure this is the Senator) is listed in the index on 16 different pages. If this interests you, let me know and we'll figure out how to get you a copy.
Given your family tie, the Governor is a 4th great-grandfather to both of us.That puts us in the same generation and makes us us cousins a few generations removed. Its always nice to meet a cousin.I'll help you all I can.
