Just an update on my current hair-brained scheme to remark the grave of Jacob Garrigues, Sr. I have been forced to resubmit my paperwork to receive Veterans Administration benefits (tombstone) for Jacob, progenitor of the New Jersey Branch. The first application was supposedly lost or never received by the VA. I will be delivering this one in person.
This program was used successfully in Rockaway to place a Revolutionary War commemorative marker at the foot of John Garrigues' stone.
The kind folks at the Presbyterian Church in Morristown have graciously accepted this offer and have even chosen a spot for placement of the stone. This stone, if approved, will include information for Jacob's wife Sarah as well.
The VA runs a program to remark unmarked or obliterated stones of US veterans. Should the application be refused, I will fund this effort myself as I did with the commemorative marker placed at the foot of Susannah Garrigues stone in Philadelphia in 1999.
Any contributions from family members would be welcomed and may also be used as tax deductions once we receive verification papers from the Church showing that there was no profit from the transaction. The money can be recorded as a charitable donation.
I imagine I should have a response from the VA by no later than September.
