Hi again Misty, its Blaine. I've got a new email @canada.com but it would be easier to get me at my previous one which is still active: firstname.lastname@example.org.
I've just found a book on Scottish settlers to Ontario and it lists hundreds of Scottish families, the ships they came on and the dates of arrival plus places where they came from. The Garrows who are catholic you have probably seen in the 1871 census index; 1 GARROW , EDWARD 41 QUEBEC HASTINGS EAST Tyendinaga 2 GARROW , WILLIAM 30 ONTARIO ADDINGTON Palmerston & Canonto 3 GARROW , ANDREW 36 QUEBEC LANARK SOUTH Beckwith 4 GARROW , CHARLES 8 ONTARIO LANARK NORTH Dalhousie, Lavant & North Sherbrooke 5 GARROW , CHARLES 35 ONTARIO LANARK NORTH Dalhousie, Lavant & North Sherbrooke
Edward and Andrew I am sure are two more of Ann's brothers; the others being Joseph born in 1841 and who married Elizabeth Mckinnon and John who is listed in the 1881 census as Yarrow (an error on the part of the transcriber: look at the family listing; the first daughter is named after John's mother Harriett (Wilkes): Name Marital Status Gender Ethnic Origin Age Birthplace Occupation Religion John YARROW M Male French 44 O Farmer Catholic Bridget YARROW M Female Irish 36 Ireland Catholic Harriet YARROW Female French 11 O Catholic Mary YARROW Female French 10 O Catholic John YARROW Male French 8 O Catholic Magaret YARROW Female French 6 O Catholic Cecelia YARROW Female French 4 O Catholic Martin T YARROW Male French 3 O Catholic Source Information:Census Place Arthur, Wellington North, Ontario Family History Library Film 1375896 NA Film Number C-13260 District 153 Sub-district F Division 2 Page Number 12 Household Number 53
I can recall who had the note but someone (was it Elizabeth Garrow out west?) has a reference to there being 17 (19?) children in John and Harriett's family.
All reports place Joseph as born in Ontario but early census records of Ann all state she was born in Quebec. Edward and Andrew are both older than Ann and were born in Quebec also.
this book on Scottish emigration tells of hundreds of Scotch who came in the 1789 - 1830 period from Scotland and settled mainly in the Glengarry county area and near Ottawa; both places where the Garrows above are mentioned. Many of these families stayed in Quebec for awhile until they had the money to get 'inland'.
We know they all moved about alot seeking free land and trying to improve their holdings but the more I read about these Scottish the more I realize that John Garrow and Harriett Wilkies may have been born in Scotland, if not them then their parent(s). I haven't found a Garrow in these ships lists from Scotland yet but I'm not done looking through them all.
