James GARTEN was the second husband of Elizabeth (Eliza) Janes KNOWLES, the widow of Edward WELLS. James GARTEN was the son of Ruben GARTEN and Hannah JOURNEE (or some say Anna JOURNEY). James was born 01 Feb 1809 in Harrison County, Kentucky. He died 19 May 1889 in Gibson County, Indiana- probably Montgomery where they lived for many years. Eliza Knowles was the daughter of David KNOWLES and Nancy PIPER. She was born 02 Feb 1812 in Kentucky and died 21 May 1885 in Montgomery. She had two children by Edward WELLS of which my husband is decended. Eliza and James GARTEN were married on 19 May 1889 in Gibson County, Indiana. The following are their children, all born in Montgomery, Gibson, IN. 1) William L. = 26 April 1837, died 11 Jan 1910. He lives with his parents up to their death, sharing in the farming. 2) Lurinda = abt. 1839 - she is mentioned in the 1850 census but none other 3) Mary Ann = abt. 1841 - she is mentioned in the 1860 and 1860 census. Another researcher has her married to Absalom CREEK 4) Permelia Jane = abt 1843. I use Permelia to trace this family due to the GARTEN name having so many variations. She remains with her parents until their death. She died 25 July 1914. 5) Martha (went by Patsy) = aby 1845. She is listed with the family census from 1850 to 1870. 6) Matilda = Abt 1848. Matilda is in the census records from 1850 until 1880 however, in 1880, she is widowed with three children with the last name of HALLER: Della (8), Ida (6) and Flora J. (2). 7) Sirilda = born in 1850, her name has ran the gamut from Sirilda to Lueldna. She is not in the 1880 census. Another researcher has her married to John L. LANG. 8) Another difficult name: Quincy, Gincy or Sinsa. She is in the 1860 and 1870 census. Another researcher has her married to a Joseph JOHNSON. 9) Comfort S. = Some have her middle name as Cinderella, but all of the documents that I have found have her middle name as "S" only. She is in the 1860 and 1870 census. She married Felix David CANTRELL (born 1858 in Indiana) on 29 April 1880 and the two can be found in the 1880 census. Their marriage record is at the County Clerk's Office in Princeton Book 5, Page 544.
This is all I have for this family, as I mentioned earlier, my research is on Eliza's first marriage. If you are interested in that line, let me know. Meanwhile, I would like to add to the request for information on the Garten's so that I can fill in whatever blanks I have. Meanwhile, I will continue to search. It's a fairly easy family to trace. Thanks
