I have always been puzzled by the connection between the Roxbury and Virginia Gary families. You have accurate information on William Gary (son of Arthur) but that doesn't discountthat thre may very well be a connection between the two families or that our William Gary could be the son of Nathaniel Gary not his brother Arthur of Roxbury.
Information on Nathaniel Gary:
"Accompanied his parents to America and settled in Roxbury, Mass. Admitted to the Roxbury church in 1652. Was a successful planter and respected citizen of Roxbury and died of smallpox in early manhood, leaving a widow and large family of young children none of whom were of age. At a County Court, held in Boston, 29 Apr 1679, power of administration of all goods, estates and credits of Nathaniel Gary, late of Roxbury, deceased, intestate, was granted unto Anne, his "Relict Widdow", she giving bond to administer the said estate according to law and to bring in a inventory thereof upon oath. At a County Court of Suffolk, held in Boston, 29 Apr 1684, power of administration of the estate of Nathaniel Gary, sometime of Roxbury, deceased, intestate, formerly granted unto Anne, his widow, "(who is since married)" at the request of the eldest son of said Gary, was granted unto William Gary and John Chandler, both of Roxbury and it was ordered that the former, Anne Gary, render an account to them of her administration thus far and they to make a new inventory de bonis non administratis and present to the next court for settlement. This inventory was presented 23 July 1684 and showed realty to the amount of 103 pounds. The final settlement was in Nov of that year".
In 1683 his son William (b. March 4, 1666) was living in Roxbury.
First, I am a descendent of the Roxbury Heath, Curtis, and Elliot families and have done a lot of research on the families of ancient Roxbury. And I think it could be plausible.
I was curious what you thought of this from Updike:
GARY, Dennis: b. 1605, age 30 yrs. in 1635, wife, Elizabeth (b. 1613, age 22), and ch: Elizabeth GARY, age 3, and Sarah, age 2. In January 1635, came on the "Abigail" to VA (p.87).
[This “Dennis Geary/Gary” is supposed to be the father of “Nathaniel Gary” of Roxbury who marries “Anne Douglas” and has a son William Gary born in 1666,many more say that “Nathaniel Gary” is the son of Arthur Gary of Roxbury.Though tradition says that Arthur Gary sailed on the Abigail he is not on the list. The Abigail did not go to VA in 1635.

Within the 500 page manuscript are genealogical records as well as detailed discussions of the origin and meaning of the family name, the coat of arms, and many poignant historical anecdotes.]
In the sixteenth century one William GARY was living at Bishop's Stratford Hertfordshire, and was the father of Nathaniel GARY, who had issue by his wife, Joan, of Arthur and John. Arthur GARY [he is sometimes called Dennis], above mentioned, is believed to have been the first of the name to emigrate to America. He came over to Roxbury, MA from England about 1635. The Gary Genealogy, pub. 1918, gives the New England line as well as a few pages of the SC GARY family (p.189).It is clear to see he did little research on the SC line since he called Uriah, wife of Thomas, a male, and stated they came from Buckingham Co., VA. They were in SC as early as 1753 (New England Hist. Reg., v.1 (p.83), History of VA, v.4 (p.387).
Since the South Carolina Garys are descended from our Virginia William Gary, is it all just a strange coincidence that refers back to the Gary branch in Roxbury?
Because (as stated above) if Nathaniel did have a son William b. 1666 he could have migrated with a member of the William Heath family of Roxbury.(someone before Updike must have thought there was a connection).Moreso, The Gary family is said to live near the Heath family in both Roxbury and Virginia and the Heath family of Virginia intermarried with the Gee and Bonner family as did the Garys.
Weirdly, the marriage date for Hannah Curtis and William Gary (son of Arthur) is the same given for William Gary and Sarah Elliot (25 AUG 1651) meaning this is erroneous information. I don't believe there is a William born in 1628 married to Sarah Elliot.Sarah Elliott was the name of Hannah Curtis Gary's mother.Someone confused the data with our William Gary.
Do you know the book?
The Descendants of Arthur Gary of Roxbury, Massachusetts: With an Account of the Posterity of Stephen Gary of Charlestown, Massachusetts and a South Carolina Family of the Same Name [0740425943 0-7404-2594-3] maybe this gives a clue.
I think it would be fascinating if there was a connection between the two Gary branches.I will tell you that is not impossible, the strongest follower of John Elliot was the historian Daniel Gookin and he migrated from Virginia to Roxbury at this time. There was migration between Virginia and Massachusetts. I have not discounted that there was probable migration from Roxbury or that our William Gary who marries an unknown Sarah is the son of Nathaniel Gary of Roxbury. So I am looking into the early families the Garys were associated with to see if there could be any further connections to Roxbury.
It is worth discussing and it does explainhow Sarah Elliot is cited eroneously in the record. Wouldn't it be interesting if our William Gary came from Roxbury? If the William who died in 1716 was born in 1666 in Roxbury not Prince George and he was married to a Sarah Elliott of Roxbury.
There is no answer here, there is a lot of confusion on the Gary line in Roxbury.I think Nathaniel and Arthur of Roxbury were brothers.
But let's get rid of the reference in the Virginia Record:
1)William Gary born 1628 married to Sarah Elliott
that is a bad mixup with
William Gary born 1628 who married Hannah Curtis in Roxbury, the daughter of Sarah Elliott Curtis.
It should read:
William Gary born 1666 m. unknown Sarah, and possibly earlier Grace Aldridge of Old Mill.Possibly the son of Nathaniel Gary of Roxbury (not proven).
