Thanks for your response.I think Milton Gary was born in New York but moved with family to Elden, McKean, PA. In the 1840 census I found a couple Gary families in that town as well as the person Milton was living with in the 1850 census in Burritt, Winnebago, Illinois. Milton's wife, Aurilla Knapp's family was also living in Elden, McKean, PA in the 1840 census.I have also found a Johnson Gary born 1821 who was born in Elden, McKean, PA. He is found in Iowa in about the same place as Milton Gary in 1860. I know he is the son of Jesse Gary who is found in the 1840 Elden, McKean, PA census. Can't help but think there is a connection here. (Hope you aren't too confused!)
It seems that Aurilla Knapp's father was born in Ostego, Ostego, NY also.. maybe these two families moved at the same time.. Where did you get the info about Milton Gary being born in Ostego, NY?
I am helping a friend with her family history.. Her line comes from Alice Anna Gary. They moved to Abiline, Kansas and from there to Idaho and Utah. She asked her 95 year old aunt about the Gary family and she said both her mother and father said Milton Gary was related to the man who Gary, Indiana was named after. If that is the case, I am having a hard time linking them together.Had you ever heard of this connection?
