My niece's grandmother Frances Nellie GASCOIGNE was baptised on 7 Sept 1894 at Christ Church, South Banbury, Oxfordshire, the daughter of James GASCOIGNE and his wife Sarah Jane nee UPTON of Plough Inn Yard, Banbury.James, a butcher, married Sarah on 29 Nov 1881 at St Mary's Church, Banbury; their marriage records James' father as John Gascoigne, a brewer; Sarah's father is George Upton, a labourer.
In the 1881 census James and Sarah are both living with her widowed mother in "Bourton, Oxford"[does this mean Black Bourton, just north of Banbury??].James is a 24-year-old fish dealer, Sarah a 24-year-old domestic nurse.
In the same census I also noticed a 23-year-old James GASCOIGNE living with his widowed mother Elizabeth, a greengrocer at Bodicote, Banbury.A John and Elizabeth GASCOIGNE were having children in Banbury at the same time as a John [wife not mentioned] had children baptised there! As I'm sure these were two different John Gascoignes, I could be in for a very prolonged hunt!
Has anyone traced any GASCOIGNEs in Banbury to give me any clues as to "our" James' origins??My niece was recently diagnosed as having secondary cancer so I'd like to get results for her as soon as possible!I'd really appreciate hearing about any Banbury Gascoignes whether they're "our" family or not as this could help me eliminate irrelevant people!
