It is family hearsay that my GT grandfather was born a GASCOIGNE....he changed his name to ROWELL. His name being Charles born 1858 (ish). It is said his mother had him on a ship/boat in the British Channel and he set foot on land 2 days old in liverpool. Father being the captain of the ship/boat...his father being the owner of the ship/boat.
It is said they were Furriers and where based up in the North somewhere ...also been said of a family fallout which is why my gt grandfather changed his name.ROWELL being said to be his mothers maiden name.
In the 1940s an article appeared in a daily newspaper asking for relatives of GASCOIGNES ...my grandfather tried to contact them but to no avail.( this is all i know about this )
Does this story sound familiar in any way to anyone with the names of ROWELL or GASCOIGNE. I am trying to trace my gt grandfathers parents but as the story states above this is proving to be very difficult.
