I had a little time to look this up today. There are some family trees on ancestry.com that show John as the father of John Jr. (possibly your John).None of the trees had a spouse except one which was Abigail Burges and had a son Daniel. It may be possible that this was his first wife as he didn't get remarried until around 1830 when he was 40 or 50 years old. I also found a death record for Elizabeth H. Gaskill in Cook County, Illinois on Nov.24, 1886.It didn't show anything else but the name and date so you may want to send away for this to see if it is the same person.Perhaps Hope was her middle name. Her son, James, named his first daughter Elizabeth so it's a possibility. The ancestry trees also showed the John Sr. (possible father of your John) was born between 1760 and 1770 and married Mary Walling. These trees show that Daniel is the father of John.I am not sure if this is the same John as yours though.
