Charles Robert Gaskins
Here is hopefully some useful information. Some I did, some another cousin did. As we each find facts we can pass them on, then maybe create a fully documented book on the Gaskins with all their lines including the Giddens.
The oldest record is from a London ship registry of a Thomas Gascoyne who came to America on the Bona Nova.He was 34 according to court affidavit in 1625. He was the first listed Thomas.(Nearly every generation of the original Thomas named a son Thomas up to 1900.
He came to the early Virginia colony. We do not know if he was related, but it is a beginning. As you know when the registrars took names they spelled them as they sounded, or how they wanted to list them.
Next listing was of a William Gascoigne, and his wife Margaret Percy listed on the tax roll for Northampton Co. , Va.in 1663-1704.They had 2 sons named Robert & Thomas, but their name was changed to Gaskins.
Robert's wife name was Elizabeth tax roll of 1663-1704.
Robert & Elizabeth had four children.
Bridgett who married William Harmonson in 1688
Robert Gaskins who married Ann Fisher
William who married the widow of Robert Winsley---Albemarle Co. , N. C.tax roll of 1694 with his brother Thomas both listed as Gaskins so this is where many of us draw the lines from our first.William set on the jury there on July 25, 1694.Both brothers shared a plot of land-574 acres on Little Flatty Creek- near Sound Neck swamp in Pasquotank Co.in 1721.
Thomas who married Mary Snead (Bridgett,William, and Thomas may have carried the Gascoigne name, but they all changed later.
We shall work on the Robert Gaskins line first as there is much information on him.
A son named Harmon(or Harmonson) who married Rachel Benthall
Tamar (Ann Fisher had a sister named Tamar)
Jane who named her first son Fisher Walton .We think he is the first Fisher.
Harmon Gaskinswas in Craven Co. ,N. C.by 1733 when he an elected official of the House of Burguess signed a petition to Gov.George Burrington to move the seat of government from Edmonton to the south side of the Neuse River in Craven Co.
Harmon & Rachel Gaskins were listed to have 4 children. Harmon & 3 of his sons were listed in the Rev.War registry from N. C.
Catrin who had a son named Thomas and a daughter named Ann Cartright.Wife unknown. He was supposed to have served in the House of Burguess.
(I believe this may be the two you speak of, but I have them listed in the 1730+Could they be the same for they served in the war?)
Fisher wife Ann children- Joseph & Ann
David wife Sarah Oxley children Ann McGlauhon,Thomas,David,John, and George. He was listed once as Sherriff of N.Umberton Co.Va.
John Thomas wife Ann, or Hannah Bright children Harmon,William,Elizabeth,Fisher,Thomas,Sarah,& Levi.shows some in N.C.
A David & Fisher both born in N. C.the sons of Harmon, or Thomaswere the first to migrate into Ga.They were the building blocks for all Gaskins clan who moved, and were born in South Central Ga.
Fisher Gaskins born in N. C.in 1780-son of Thomas(War vet of Amer.Rev. ) left with brother David as said before migrated to Beaufort District,S. Fisher & family moved back to Beaufort District where they are listed on the 1810 census. That same year Rhoda died in Beaufort S. C. and Fisher went back to Warren with his five little children and remarried in Jan. 17th 1811 to Mary Lacy daughter of Rev.Soldier Archibald Lacy-sister of Rev.John B.Lacy.Next they moved top Telfair Co.Ga where he served as a petit juror for the first term Oct.of 1812,Telfair Superior Court.
It was then that Fisher entered the cattle business on an extensive basis.owning a large herd. It was so large he had cattle all the way up to Walton Co.Ga.and other counties in that region.1821 he moved the cattle to the Ocmulgee River into the new county of Appling now Coffee, and lived there.
1825-1830 he moved to the new county of Lowndeswhich was once a part of Irwin County. This was near Berrien Co, and lived there until 1832. Next they moved, but he left much of his herd with his sons John,William, and Harmon. They created a huge cattle business with cattle managers who were paid at the end of each year. They spread to the counties of Clinch, Ethols, and Lowndes counties, and into Florida. Each year they sold stock in Savannah.Fisher annually would go with his sons to inspect their cattle, and to drive them to the various stockyards for sale.
Fisher eventually settled with his section ofthe herd to near Newmansville,Columbus Co. ,Fl. Here he died in 1848, and buried in old Newmansville cemetary.so was Mrs.Gaskins.
