I have just found this forum and wondered if your expertise could solve some Gastrell queries that I have. I am researching the surname Alvis (my mother's maiden name).
On 13 July 1806 Robert Gastrell married Nancy Alvis at St James, Bristol.
I have identified the following probable children:
Sarah, baptised 3 May 1807 at Almondsbury, buried 9 Apr 1826 at Westbury-on-Trym aged 19. Mary, baptised 13 Aug 1809 at Almondsbury. James, baptised 1 Dec 1811 at Almondsbury. Edward, baptised 12 Sep 1813 at Almondsbury. Elizabeth, baptised 7 Apr 1816 at Westbury-on-Trym. Robert, baptised 6 Dec 1819 at Westbury-on-Trym, buried 16 Dec 1819 at Westbury-on-Trym aged 16 days.
It is possible that Maria buried 13 Aug 1821 at Westbury-on-Trym was a further daughter.
It looks like Robert was buried on 10 Jun 1836 at Westbury-on-Trym aged 50, ie born 1785/6, making it likely that he was the son of John and Grace baptised at Almondsbury on 26 Feb 1786.
I believe that Nancy Alvis was the Ann Alvis baptised at Kingston Seymour, Somerset on 21 Jul 1776, daughter of James and Mary (Hill). However, so far I have been unable to find her death/burial to get an approximate date of birth which would help to confirm this. Can anyone help?
Does anyone know what happened to the four "surviving" children Mary, James, Edward and Elizabeth?
Ann/Nancy had an illegitimate son James baptised on 23 Mar 1800 at Clevedon, Somerset.I believe he was the James Alvis who died at 26 King Street, Bedminster on 12 Jan 1845 and whose will is available for download from National Archives Documents Online. He directs that his house be sold and the proceeds be invested to be inherited by his daughter Sarah Caroline when she reached 21 (which she did).In the event of her death it was to go to "Lucy Gastrell daughter of my half-sister Mary Gastrell".
So far I have been unable to find a suitable Lucy Gastrell alive in 1845.In 1851 there is a Lucy A, 19, born Wickwar, living with her mother Mary, 67, born Chard, Somerset, widow, pauper at 2 Chapel Row Clifton. It seems unlikely that this Mary was James' half-sister.A Lucy Ann Gastrell was baptised on 9 Jun 1833 at St John, Bedminster to Robert and Mary, who could be the same girl. The only marriage I can find for Robert and Mary is
Robert Gastrell, bach/Mary Jones, widow, on 7 Oct 1828 at Long Ashton, Somerset.
