If your Stephen Gates was born abt. 1776, then he could have been a GRANDSON of Stephen Gates who d. 1787.
He MIGHT be the Stephen gates (b. abt. 1776), son of Stephen & Deire (Rude) Gates.
Here's what I know of this family:
Generation No. 1
1.Stephen6 Gates(Stephen5, Stephen4, Stephen3, Stephen2, Eustace1) was born 13 January 1718 in Preston, New London Co., CT, and died 11 December 1787 in Halifax, Windham Co., VT.He married Hannah Meech 11 April 1743 in Preston, New London Co., CT, daughter of John Meech and Sarah Hutchins. She was born 4 March 1724 in Preston, New London Co., CT, and died in of CT or VT.
Notes for Stephen Gates:
Stephen, son of Stephen and Hannah (Woodward) Gates, lived at Preston, New London Co., Connecticut.
"Stephen Gates, son of Stephen, Jr., baptized 13 March 1718, by the Rev. treat" (First Church of Preston Records, Vol. 1, p. 25; Vol. P, p. 185)
His birth date also is cited in Vital Records, Preston, New London Co., CT, Barbour Collection, Film 2, Book 1, p. 84
This family was found by Linda Christensen in the compiled Vital Records of Preston, Connecticut:

There are records of Stephen Gates among the men of Preston who responded to the alarm at Lexington, Mass. in 1775 and who otherwise served in the American War for Independence.Thse records probably refer to his son, Stephen, b. 1746/47.
Toward the end of or shortly after the American War for Independence, Stephen Gates moved to Halifax, Windham Co., Vermont, where he died, say 11 Dec. 1787, aged nearly 69.People named Woodard (his mother's maiden name) also lived and were active buying and selling land around Halifax, Vermont in the late 1700s.
His death date is given in Stephen Gates & Descendants, by Clarence Almon Torrey. New England Historic Genealogical Society Register (Boston, Oct 1966), Vol. 120, pp. 264-265.
According to local officials, there are two probate districts in Windham County, and the one that includes Halifax is Marlboro.A clerk at the Marlboro Probate Court was kind enough to look in their index, and said that there is no will or probate record on file for anyone named Gates prior to 1800.
Deeds in Vermont are kept by the Town Clerks. The Town of Halifax has old deed records from the 1700s, and they are accessible to researchers. They have a general index and each book is also indexed. The general index is for deed records only. The older record books include deeds as well as town meeting records, animal registrations, etc., and so it would also be worth while to examine the index for early books to see if any other records exist.

Notes for Mercy Bennett:
She was of Norwich, New London Co., Connecticut at the time she married in 1776.
Child of Joshua Gates and Mercy Bennett is:

7.Susannah7 Gates (Stephen6, Stephen5, Stephen4, Stephen3, Stephen2, Eustace1) was born 30 January 1756 in Preston, New London Co., CT, and died Aft. 1810 in of Manlius, Onondaga Co., NY.She married Col. Elijah Phillips, Sr. 5 March 1778 in Second Church of Preston (now Griswold), New London Co., CT, son of John Phillips and Mercy Pain.He was born Bef. 1755 in of ?? Smithfield, Providence Co., RI, and died 10 August 1815 in Manlius, Onondaga Co., NY.
Notes for Susannah Gates:
The last definite record we have of Susannah is a deed in 1810.It is not known for certain when she died.
Susannah's youngest brother, Zephaniah Gates, also lived in Manlius, Onondaga Co., NY, and sold property to E. Phillips by two deeds in 1810.He was enumerated in present-day Sullivan, Madison (then Chenango) Co., NY in 1800, which was immediately east of Manlius, Onondaga Co.Zephaniah Gates appears in a number of deeds in Onondaga Co. and Madison Co., NY.
Deed records also show Joseph Gates and Joshua Gates also owned land in Manlius in the early 1800s--they might be the brothers of Susannah (Gates) Phillips and Zephaniah Gates.
A man named Nehemiah Gates (1768-1823) and his wife Phoebe (1765-1850) also appear in deed records of Manlius, Onondaga Co., NY.A death notice for Nehemiah Gates, age 55, was printed in the Onondaga Register, Aug. 20, 1823, p. 3, col. 2.An obituary for Mrs. Phoebe Gates, age 85, was printed in the Syracuse Standard, Mar. 21, 1850, p. 3, col. 1.Their daughter, Anna Gates, married Dearborn B. Bickford in Nov. 1815 (see: Onondaga Register, Nov. 29, 1815, p. 3, col. 4).Dearborn Bickford was born 29 Mar 1792 in Gilmanton, New Hampshire; he was the son of Paul and Mary Bickford, and the family moved to Corinth, Vermont about 1796
A man named Solomon Gates died in Onondaga Co., NY in 1810, and his estate was administered by Salomon Babcock; the estate did not contain enough to cover debts; properties were ordered to be sold 31 Oct. 1810.(Book A, Real Estate, p.73; Onondaga Co.)
There were other people named Gates living in Manlius, NY (see compiled census and deed records in notes under Elijah Phillips (b. abt. 1755), including an Elezur Gates who died in 1831 and left a will (Will Book E, p. 108); Elezur Gates (1770-1830) was from East Haddam, Middlesex Co., CT, and appears to be no close relation.
More About Susannah Gates:
11.Zephaniah7 Gates (Stephen6, Stephen5, Stephen4, Stephen3, Stephen2, Eustace1) was born 7 March 1766 in Preston, New London Co., CT, and died in Delaware Co., IN.He married Abigail Griffith, daughter of Seth Griffith and Polly Wescott. She was born in of Rensselaer or Duchess Co., NY.
Notes for Zephaniah Gates:
A biographical sketch of his grandson, Zephaniah Gates (b. 1838), states: “... Zephaniah, Sr. ... was born in Rhode Island and was one of the early settlers first in Cattaraugus, later in Chautauqua County, N. Y., and after that in Erie County, Pa. Later in life he emigrated to Indiana and died there in Delaware County. He was of English parentage." (Portrait and Biographical Album of Ionia and Montcalm Counties, Michigan, by Chapman Brothers, Edna Harris (1891), pp. 339)
Zephaniah Gates married a woman named Abigail (apparently Abigail Griffith). He lived in Manlius, Onondaga Co., NY, as is evidenced by deed records there as early as 1797, and as late as 1812.At least two deeds, dated 1810, were to E. Phillips--probably either his brother-in-law, Elijah Phillips, or a nephew. He also owned land in what is now Madison Co. (probably in Cazanovia), as evidenced by three deeds there.
Cathy Crowell, of Fayetteville, NY, shared this from her Tavern Tales:
Zephaniah Gates, p. 8 (reference is to the Thomas Clark taver
"In 1806, Zephaniah Gates sold 18 acres in lot 1 of Sullivan township, Madison county to Peter Westerman. When Westerman conveyed this property on the north side of the Seneca Turnpike to Jeremiah Gates in 1811, it contained a tavern. The tavern was supplied with water by means of “an aqueduct subterranean passage conveyed through pipes of bored logs sunk under the surface of the ground.”The aqueduct was fed by a spring on the south side of the turnpike about one quarter of a mile from the tavern.Westerman reserved the right to take one-fourth of the water at one-fourth the expense of keeping the aqueduct in repair.Jeremiah Gates could go on his land with wagons and carts, could dig up the soil to repair the aqueduct, but Gates was not to injure the premises more than necessary to make the repairs. The old tavern property came into possession of Daniel Gates, later Francis H. Gates and in 1996 was owned by Daniel F. Gates.Following Jeremiah Gates’ purchase, there was no further mention of the tavern in deed records.
"Just west of Westerman’s tavern and also in Sullivan township was the Seneca turnpike farm purchased in 1805 from Zephaniah Gates by Thomas Clark. Both the Westerman and Clark taverns were in operation at the same time."
1800 US Census (Roll 24, p. 171)

1 male under 10
1 male 26-45
2 females under 10
1 female 26-45
1 female 45+
(Note: Zephaniah would have been 44 in 1800.)
From a compiled census list, I found that Zephaniah Gates was also enumerated in the 1800 U.S. Census in Chenango (now Madison) Co., NY, p. 978, Line 7.
1 male 0-9, 2 males 16-24, 1 male 25-44, 1 female 0-9, 1 female 16-24, 1 female 25-44.
This record was listed under Cazenovia, but a note by the transcriber indicates that this family was enumerated in the present Town of Sullivan, Madison Co. (all immediately west of Manlius & Pompey, Onondaga Co.), New York.
1810 US Census (Roll 34, p. 37)
Onondaga Co., NY (no town specified, but probably in the Town of Manlius near Manlius Village, as Aaron Wood, Jr. was enumerated two lines above)
2 males under 9
1 male 10-15
1 male 26-44
1 female under 9
2 females 10-15
1 female 26-44
(Note: Zephaniah would have been 54 in 1810.)
His 1766 birth date comes from compiled published accounts of the Gates Family in Mass. and Conn., citing church records in Preston, Connecticut. The 7 March 1766 birth date was confirmed by the original vital records of Preston, CT.
However, Dave (firstname.lastname@example.org) shows a different birth date:
Name: Zepheniah GATES
Birth: 7 Aug 1770 in New London, Conneticut
Death: in Delware, Indiana
Wife: Abigail GRIFFITH b: Abt 1797 in Dutchess, New York d. in Delaware, Indiana
Phillips Stone (Oct. 7, 2004, genforum.com, Gates Forum # 3019) shows:
Zepheniah and Abigail Griffith Gates had eleven children:
Sally Gates, b. Nov. 26, 1796 in Rensselaer Co. NY
Polly Gates, b. Oct 1, 1800 in Rensselaer Co. NY.; d. Aug 11, 1832.
Alonzo Griffith Gates, b. in Maddison ,Onondaga Co. NY.
Hiram Gates, b. in Maddison ,Onondaga Co. NY.
George Gates, b. in Maddison ,Onondaga Co. NY.
Emily Gates, b. in Maddison ,Onondaga Co. NY.
Susie Gates, b. in Maddison ,Onondaga Co. NY.
Harry Gates, b. in Maddison ,Onondaga Co. NY.
Alfred Gates, b. in Maddison ,Onondaga Co. NY.
Albert Gates, b. in Maddison ,Onondaga Co. NY.
Albro Gates, b. in Maddison ,Onondaga Co. NY.
[NOTE: The birth places for the rest of the children are probably guesses, as there is no “Maddison” in Onondaga Co.Madison County is immediately east of Onondaga Co., and Zephaniah Phillips apparently lived in each.It is likely that he lived near the county line. His son Albro was said to have been born in Chautauqua Co., NY in 1819.--NMS]
(NOTE:It is unclear to me how "our" Gates relate to the the other Gates who resided in the area.Zephaniah Gates and Susannah (Gates) Phillips had a brother, Joseph Gates (b. 1760) who might be the same in the following feeds. They did not have a brother named Joshua or Nehemiah, so if these two are related, it would be by another way.)

Notes for Harry P. Gates:
From a sketch of his son, Zephaniah Gates, in Portrait and biographical album of Ionia and Montcalm counties, Michigan, by Chapman Brothers, Edna Harris (1891), pp. 339-340:
“[Harry P. Gates], after his marriage in Erie County, Pa., removed by team to Indiana in 1844. In 1845 with his wife and three children he removed by ox-team and wagon to Michigan. One cow followed in their wake and their purse contained $1.50. The journey took fifteen days and the total expenses were seventy-five cents. They reached Ionia County, Mich., and bought fifty acres on the south side of the Grand River, giving in exchange for the land his ox-team and wagon. He built a log house and the happy family contentedly began the pioneer life. Mr. Gates improved this land and added to it until at one time he had one hundred and sixty acres, but has given most of this away to his sons. He still resides on the old homestead and is an old-time Democrat and Deacon in the Baptist Church. His good wife who has aided him in this pioneer life was Sallie Stephens, daughter of Rozell Stephens of Niagara County, N. Y. This family traces its lineage back to the blue blood of Plymouth Rock.
“[This couple] had four children: Lydia (Mrs. Disbrow), Zephaniah, Clinton and David."
