In the name of God Amen 8th April 1578, I Cheddocke Gawthrop of Keirby in the county of York being of good and perfect remberance but sick of body do make my last will and testament in manner and form following, First I bequeath my soul to almighty God and my body to be buried wherever it pleaseth God.
I give and grant unto Bryan Stapleton of Carltonexecutor All my hole lease, title and interest given unto my by Richard Gawthrop, my uncle, and whatsoever I have…of the said lease I do bequeath it …… and clearly unto the said Bryan Stapleton esquire, and he in consider of my mother, he shall lease some of the said ….
I give unto my mother Agnes Gawthrop £8 which ……of James Rythew esquire, he appointeth by my uncle in his last will.
I will that my said executor shall give unto his eldest son, Richard Stapleton £3 to buy him a nagg., and to his second son George £10 to buy him a nagg.
To Richard Readman, son of John Readman of Keirby 30 shillings.To Thomas Readman, son of the said John 30 shillings.To Maud Readmann, daughter of the said Johnanother 30 shillings.
The residue of eleven pounds I would have given amongst the poorestfolks in Carlton at the discretion of my executor.
The residue of my goods, chattels whatsoever unbequeathed I give unto Bryan Stapleton aforesaid esquire whom I ordain sole executor of this my last will and testament.
