Greetings, Samantha!
You ask what happened to the Gazey Gazettes.
Way back, before Genforum, some folks with an interest in researching the Gazey name made contact and started pooling information. I did not have the time to visit the various county record offices, so I took on the photocopying and distribution of our findings.
Towards the end of my living in England, in the early days of the internet information boom, I was contacted by people whose names have never appeared on Genforum. In postingI enclosed letters saying how much we would like to know their family stories. With these last few contacts, I never received acknowledgement of receipt let alone any contribution.Dear Friends, I am only human. The final straw came when some fellow had the impudence to criticize the layout– and, of course, made no contribution. I do not know who these people were; what their involvement was; I doubt that they were Gazeys.
Then I received a final request.I loved the freshness of this contact. This lassie told me that she was pregnant, had no intention of getting married but would love to know more about the father’s family.I wished her luck, hoped that she might change her mind about the marriage and sent her the master copy.
Twenty copies were produced.Did they find their way into twenty waste paper baskets?
Does it matter? No.We now have Genforum, Family Search, Ancestry.com, the National Archives’ A2A website: everything that was found by us is now available on the internet.
There were individual stories. For myself, I can say, that with the passing of time, I now know that there are two errors in the story that I wrote: the first George Gazey of Saintbury, born in 1800, died in infancy – but was replaced by another of the same name, with the same mother (burial dates are important), while two people have asked whether I am certain of my interpretation of the relationship of the Droitwich Gazeys.I no longer know what I wrote.Don’t trust other people’s research; use it as a finding aid only.
There is only one way to research one’s family and that is to start with what is known: names, dates and/or places and to post on, for example, this Genforum and, in closing, may I say a big “Thankyou” to our administrators and contributors here.
Do I regret posting on the last copy?Yes, when I read of letters from Australia which receive no reply and when I suspect that the knowledge that there was once this fantastic treasure trove of information (Really, there wasn't) might be blocking new investigation.
Good luck!Post what you know – and see what happens!
Gillian
