Hi Bob,
My goodness, lots of conflicting information!
Firstly, I made an error: Robert, Mary and family were not at 34 Maxwell Street in the 1881 census, so we can assume you're correct about their address of 109 Castlebank Street.
Secondly, we agree about the births of Robert and Grace at 34 Maxwell Street while apparently residing with Hamilton Geddes and family in 1883 and 1884.
Can I ask if you have any further information on Robert, especially where he was born and who his parents were?
Hamilton's parents were David (a shoemaker) and Ursula(nee Stewart) who seem to have lived in the townlands of Craigarusky and Killenakin very close to Killinchy in County Down, Northern Ireland. I have their marriage date and I have a copy of David's death certificate. Ursula pre-deceased David. In addition to Hamilton they appear to have had two daughters Mary (witness at David's death) and Ellen (David is confirmed as her father in her marriage details). I'm sure they probably had other children and I wonder if Robert is one of them? Of course if Robert isn't their son all trhhis information is irrelevant for your friend!
I had always assumed that Robert returned to Ireland but obviously not if he died in 1900.
Moving forward, I have 27 Geddes/Geddis listings in the Killinchy area in the 1911 Census of Ireland. This is certainly where my ancestors are from.
Let me know if you have any more on Robert.
Best wishes, Jack
