Hi Bob,
I'm delighted to find out that Robert was Hamilton's brother. I suspected he was but it's great to have confirmation.
I'm struck by the symmetry of years with Hamilton and Robert's families.
1879: My great-grandfather David was born. As Helen was 2 years old in 1881 they were very close in age. What is Helen's birthday? David was born on 22 October 1879. Another point is that Helen was shown as Ellen in the 1881 census. As Robert had a sister called Ellen this looks as though she was called after her aunt.
1902: David marries Maria Moses in Pollokshaws. Helen marries David Ross.
1931: Grace marries William Clark. My grandfather John Moses Geddes marries Janet Shaw in Pollokshaws.
I wonder if the families were at each others weddings and christenings?
I now need to tell your friend about the information I have on Robert's father and mother.
David and Ursula were married on 15 August 1829 in the Presbyterian Church in Killinchy, Northern Ireland. When married David's name is listed as GADDIS.
I have no note of Ursula's death. She was deceased in 1879 when Hamilton was married in Glasgow.
David Geddis died at Killenikan (townland beside Killinchy) on 8 July 1886 aged 79 years. He died of cancer of the lip. His daughter Mary was present at the death. This Mary was obviously Hamilton and Robert's sister.
I don't know my official relationship to your friend - she would appear to be of my father's generation - but please pass on my very best wishes. I note you said she was 'off island', which island would that be? I assume it isn't close to Glasgow?!
Best wishes, Jack
