I am searching for a man named William J. Gentry born abt. 1830 in either AL or MS. He married a widow, Temperance M. Hunt (maiden name unknown) and the couple are on the census for Rapides Parish, LA in 1860. By 1870 they are in Ward 3 or Sabine Parish. By 1880 his widow is living back in Rapides Parish next door to her son, John Hunt with her Gentry children, the youngest eight years of age. I am assuming William J. Gentry had died by the 1880 census after his son, Columbus (8 on the 1880) census was born (i.e., abt. 1872 or so).
He is related to the William Howard Cotton/Cotten family in Rapides Parish, and on the 1860 census is the guardian of two of Cotten's children: Emeline and Jefferson, who are listed on the census with his family. I believe Wm. Cotten was married to William Gentry's older sister, Eliza J. Gentry (no proof).
Can anyone give me any information about this man?
