I would suggest you view my postings regarding Winnifred (George) Gilliam Human on the Human GenForum site. They are more in-depth than the postings on the George GenForum Site.
My postings were made to illustrate the origins of the Cherokee Indian myth regarding Winnifred's ancestry.I have illustrated that this myth originated with Winnifred's second husband, Basil Human, Jr., rather than herself. That is not an assumption. It is a conclusion based on facts.
You will note in my postings to the Human GenForum that I discuss the term "mulatto" and refer to its usage as a catch-all term for anyone with some degree of non-caucasion ancestry.
If we examine the Human claim of Cherokee ancestry, let us examine it closely. The earliest references to Basil Human, Sr. the father of Basil Human, Jr. are found in Maryland. To my knowledge, the Cherokee Indians never resided in the colony of Maryland.
A Basil Human is found in the 1790 Censuslisted as a "free negro."Given the unusual nature of this name, I don't think it a leap of the imagination to think they would be related. Therefore, I still deem it more likely than not that the "mulatto" reference made regarding Basil Human referred to some degree of African-American ancestry, rather than Native American.
I wish all Human descendants well in researching their ancestry.I am not a descendant of that family. My primary interest is in clearing up inaccurate information regarding Winnifred (George) Gilliam Human.
