My Gr-Great grandfather was Daniel GEORGE. Immigrated from Alsace-Lorraine, France to New York City probably in 1850's. The name was originally JOERG. Family members were spelling the name both ways in New York in late 1800's. Have also seen this name spelled JORG with an umlaut (two dots) over the O. I understand from a friend who speaks German, that O with an umlaut, and OE are interchangeable. The people of Alsace-Lorraine are a mixture of French and German. If your Georges come from this region, you might want to check these alternate spellings.
