Henry Vincent Gerard is my great great grandfather on my fathers side. My grandmother was Gertrude L. Gerard, granddaughter of Vincent. My family has searched for years to find out what happened to Vincent Gerard. Through stories told to me by my grandmother and Lee M. Gerard, grandson of Vincent through his son Dean, I am left with a very sad picture of the man. He was married to Mary Rohama Lockwood, c.1858. According to his military record he enlisted in the 9th Michigan Regiment on August 15, 1861, in Coldwater, Michigan and listed his occupation as that of a Mason. At this time he had two sons, Dean, b.30Apr1859, and Leroy Vincent, b.12Jan1861. When Vincent left for the army he left his wife and children abandoned and destitute. She was subsequently rescued by her family and taken home. Vincent returned to Michigan after his desertion from Camp Chase, Ohio and was given a rude reception by her father Charles and was sent away. He was never heard from again. Some of us thought that maybe the Lockwood family did more than send him away.
I have a letter written by Lee M. Gerard to my uncle that tells the story from a personal prospective that I would be happy to share with anyone interested.
