Edward Franklin Gibler Sr. and Rachel Catherine (Kate) Balleu
Edward "Neddy" was born August 30th, 1837 at Cincinnatti, Ohio. He was the son of James David and Sarah Margaret Sams Gibler. He died May 11th, 1887 in Mercer County, Missouri. He was married about 1861 to Rachel Catherine Balleu Collins. Rachel was born March 22nd, 1833 in Tennessee, the daughter of Jesse and Catherine Mums Balleu. Catherine died October 27th, 1923(?) [my book has a typo] At Davis City, Iowa. They [Edward and Rachel] are both buried at the Hamilton Cemetery, Mercer County, Missouri. They lived in the "Jack Oak Community" four miles north-east of Davis City, Iowa. In 1872 they bought 40 acres of land in Mercer County, Missouri from "Kates" brother Benjamin F. and Sarah, his wife, for 75 cents an acre. In 1874 he purchased 11 acres from James F. Gray. On May 14th, 1880 they purchased "Kates" fathers farm from the heirs. On February 5th, 1883 they deeded 40 acres to each Albert D. and John H. (sons). Then on February 5th, 1887 they deeded 60 acres where the house stood to their younger son Edward Franklin Jr. and 40 acres to their youngest daughter Ida. Ruby Griffe granddaughter of "Neddy" and "Kate" remembered her father Albert telling about his dad selling his cattle when he was just a lad, he was paid in silver dollars and kept them in a nail keg. "Neddy" sat up all night with his gun across his lap, when Grandma wanted him to go to bed, he told her if she would tend to her business, he would tend to his. Early the next morning he got Albert up and was told to hitch the team to the buggy. Albert drove the team while his dad guarded the money until they reached the bank. "Neddy" lost the joint water out of his wrist, and had a crippled hand. He died of Brights disease.
After "Neddy's" death she rented the farm and took Frank and Ida to live in Davis City where her two brothers lived, but according to a letter from James Howard, his wife was a sister of "Neddy's", she wasn't very satisfied. She bought and ran a boarding house there. Rachel met Simeon Starkey as he was working on the Burlington Rail Road through there. They were later married. Rachel had been married previously to William Collins, they were the parents of two children, a baby girl (died), and William Courtney Collins. There is a bill of sale of the Edward Gibler estate, dated May 8th, 1888, on file at the court house in Princeton, Missouri.
