I am finding out that some of our relatives began using an "abbreviated" version of our surname, example: "Gil" (i.e. Roberto Gil), "Lamadrid", "La Madrid"or "de Lamadrid". This is the case with the Gil de Lamadrid relatives in Mexico, many of whom go by the last name of Lamadrid (dropping the Gil). Our family is from a town called Lamadrid, located in Santander, Spain. I have been unable to find the relative who arrived in Puerto Rico from either Spain or another country. If you can help I would surely appreciate it.
