I am extremely interested in learning the documentary sources for the English ancestry of the GILLIAM family. What seems to have been handed from one researcher to another is a confused account.
For instance, I find no SIR RICHARD GILLIAM who married a LADY DOROTHY PEMBROKE in G.E.C.,COMPLETE PEERAGE.Further there was no PEMBROKE surnamed family to be raised to the peerage, which the "Lady" title would indicate.
There was a SIR RICHARD DEVEREUX who married a LADY DOROTHY HASTINGS, the daughter of GEORGE HASTINGS, 1st Earl of Huntingdon, and his wife, ANNE, daughter of HENRY STAFFORD, Duke of Buckingham, who was the widow of Sir WALTER HERBERT, second son of WILLIAM HERBERT, 1st Earl of PEMBROKE!
According to the autobiography of Rev. DEVEREUX JARRATT, he states very clearly that the DEVEREUX name came into the JARRATT family in honor (not blood descent) to ROBERT DEVEREUX, Earl of Essex, one of the favorites of Queen ELIZABETH I. And then it is assumed that the DEVEREUX name came into the Virginia GILLIAM family on the marriage of MARY JARRATT to WILLIAM GILLIAM.
Further, there are postings on this site which state that the "correct" line of my particular branch of the GILLIAM family is:
RICHARD GILLIAM who married DOROTHY BRADLEY WILLIAM GILLIAM (b. 1608) who married ? WILLIAM DEVEREUX GILLIAM (b. 1631/3) married (1) ANN POYTHRESS and (3) ELIZABETH LAWSON [by 1st wife) RICHARD GILLIAM b.c. 1654)(d. February 15, 1713, Pr. George Co., VA) married MARGARET LAWSON
From RICHARD and MARGARET LAWSON, I can find primary sources for their parentage of: WILLIAM GILLIAM (b.baptized March 26, 1699, St. Peter's Parish, New Kent Co.VA -source "The Vestry Book and Register of St. Peter's Parish," p. 357. He married a woman named AGNES....and here again there are internet sources who claim she was a HARRIS and daughter of EDWARD, JOHN or JOHN EDWARD HARRIS, and again with no listed sources to prove this.
WILLIAM GILLIAM (b. 1699) made his will in Granville CO., NC October 12, 1776, probated February Court, 1781. Their son:
WILLIAM GILLIAM, who made his will June 1, 1803, and proved at February Court 1804, Granville Co., NC. Mentions wife, ELIZABETH, who was still living, and among their children nemtioned in the
