Your posting had me curious, so I did some follow-up work on John GIPES.I think the possibility of a match is very high. Here is what I find:
In 1900 (MN, Fillmore, Jordan) John GIPES is listed as born June 1860 in Illinois to parents born in PA.He cannot read or write. In his home are a wife (Violetta) and 7 kids.
In 1910 (MN, Fillmore, Jordan) John GYPES is with wife Sadie V. (his 3rd wife, her first husband) and several kids.He is born in IL to parents in PA.
In 1920 (MN, Olmsted, Rochester) John GIPES is with wife Mary, her son Lester STORY, and his son Louis. He is born in IL and his parents in PA.
I have not yet located him in 1930, but his wife Mary appears to be working at the hospital in Rochester. She is listed as married.
A few clues here. . .
The birth location matches very well with my John GIPE.There is another John Wesley GIPE who was born about 1862/3 in Illinois and is the son of Samuel and Sarah GIPE (Lee County, IL 1870 and 1880).However, that John is shown as in school in 1880 at the age of 18 and, because of that, it is likely that he would be able to read and write.Census records on my GIPE connections show that many of them also did not read or write, so while this is rather common in this era, it narrows the options for your John GIPES.
The 1900 census lists John as being born in June 1860.That census was taken as of June 1 as was the 1870 census for my John GIPE.However, your John GIPES is just 39 in that census (not having had his June birthday yet) and mine is 10 in 1860.The enumeration date on the 1870 census was actually on Aug. 4th, so by then, if they are the same John, he would have been 10 years old and it would be easy for a mistake to be made on his age.Even so, the difference in age is minimal.
I did a search for John Gip* born or living in IL in 1870 and my John GIPE is the only one on record. The Lee County GIPE is shown in that census as Wesley GIPE.
Also, you mentioned that your John was married 3 times. If I'm reading this correctly, it is likely he was actually married 4 times, with Sadie Violetta being his 3rd wife and Mary being his fourth.Several online trees at Ancestry.com identify a Mary Brown as a wife of a John GIPES of Minnesota.Perhaps we ought to work together to see if there are some clues that we can share to enlighten us to some possible connections. The era John was married should list his parents' names on them so if you or any of the others have any of those records, that might be helpful.
