Barbara, William Thomas Gipson and Clemmie Ella Poe Gipson were my great grandparents and Otis/Oddice was my paternal grandmother’s (Ruth Pearl Gipson Slocum) brother. My grandmother was a twin and her twin brother’s name was Buford Earl Gipson. They were 5 ½ years younger than Otis with a sister between them. Otis was the 5th of nine children. I have a lot of info on this family including pictures of William, Ella, their children & spouses (including Otis) and their grandchildren. I do not have any definite info of a Cherokee connection, however I have heard rumors of one through the Poe line. There has also been a suggestion of a Melungeon connection through the Gipson line. Websites about this group of people:http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hornbeck/blkdutch.htmhttp://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hornbeck/blkdutch.htm , http://www.melungeon.org/node/7http://www.melungeon.org/node/7 , http://www.melungeonhealth.org/info.htmlhttp://www.melungeonhealth.org/info.html
On a side note: I asked my dad to do a genealogy DNA test and the results do suggest a possible Melungeon and/or Indian connection.I also have quite a few of the “traits” that are common to the Melungeons/Indians.The pictures I have of the family also suggest this.My grandmother and most of her siblings were of a somewhat dark complexion with Otis being the darkest of them all. Common surnames associated with the Melungeons in this family are Gipson and Hill in the Gipson line and Jones in the Poe line.
Here is the info I have on William, Ella and Otis. I also have more info on the other siblings.
