Snake Girty's family connections are a little complicated to the earlier Girtys. He's actually not a Girty by blood, but by adoption. Part of his Civil War pension file has been posted to confirm this. He was born and given the name E-mah-dah-ne-yer-gah which means Crying Snake. His father's name is unknown, but he had heard that he may have been a white man. His mother was Nahne. Snake had one brother named Kah-ler-sah-yoh-hah. After the death of Snake's mother he was adopted by Jack Girty (b.1792) and later took the name of Girty. Snake was first married to Kahugunstah. She has closer blood ties to the Girtys. Her parents were said to be John Gah-stah-gah-lah and Che-nah-sah. She was also the sister of Wilson Girty and Buck Girty, sons of Jack Girty. So, It's possible that John Gah-stah-gah-lah is John (Jack) "Panther" Girty. Or she could be a daughter of Jack Girty's wife, but of a different father. I doubt this is the case. If I could find out what some of these Cherokee names mean then it may provide better answers. Snake's second wife was Nancy Anderson (or Wartuck). She later married a Toney.
The postings at Genforum have a lot of information on Snake Girty. If you have any other questions please ask.
How does Maggie Girty fit into this? Was she Jeff Girty's wife?
