hi jim, i am interested in your research of the girty
family. especially the connection(or not) of the ok girtys
and the pa girtys. my wife's ggrandfather is jack "panther"
girty. culturally jack is delaware by paternity but becomes
cherokee by maternity as children are given full rights and
benefit by maternal nativity and recorded as such. in the
book "being and becoming indian" ch 2 by colin calloway he
mentions simon girty jr's nephew george being a secondary
chief with the delaware and moving "westward" with them in
1822-23. facts are the delaware moved to indian territory
now present day ok(but included at one time a portion of
kansas and arkansas). in 1828 jack is shown living on the
arkansas side of the arkansas river and receiving a portion
of appropriated money to move across the river to present
day ok(the canadian district of i.t.). in 1832-33 he is
mentioned in james thompson's daybook in ok(i.t.). jack is
listed as an old settler in the 1851 roll as one having
arrived in i.t. prior to forced removals. his wife is an
eastern cherokee having immigrated with her family prior
to the 1851 roll. jack's father mortar girty in my opinion
is most likely george, son of george, son of simon sr. my
father-in-law said his dad(wilson)had sandy hair and green
eyes and said his dad told that his father was part english
or irish. native american genealogists i have spoken to say
that without english names it may never be proven the exact
identity of a person. but dates, locations, etc along with
the personal testimony seem to be enough thread to weave a
fairly conclusive picture. the george you mention in ohio
could possibly be the younger son of thomas. i have spoken
to several descendants of a george girty from ohio.i have
some documents from civil war on wilson but would love to
see more particularly about snake. you certainly have an
interesting twist on his history. i also have seen his sons
applications and the markings. there also seems to be a
good deal of information to verify the three younger girty
boys had children by other women and of culturally it was
not uncommon to "quit" a person or change relationships.
i will stop here and look forward to hearing from you soon
and sharing more information.i am at this time unable to
receive attachments by email so any documents would need to hard copy which i would expect to reimburse costs incurred.
thank you! bill furry
