Don -- I will have to check on the James Hillary Githens that you mentioned, and maybe I'll try checking Surrey parish registers and see what I can find. Thanks for the lead.
The Henry Gittings who married Rebecca Smith is my ancestor Henry Githens. I have pretty much all of the information available (about 15 yers ago) from Nicholas County on Henry and his family.
James, Henry, and John Githens lived in Nicholas County, Kentucky (earlier it was part of Bourbon County). They owned land and worked on roads, etc. James was much older than the other two. He and his wife Caty (Cathy?) gave written permission for their daughter Elizabeth to marry Matthew Stewart in Bourbon County, and her bond was signed by Henry Githens, in 1796. In 1805 he was excused from road work, because of "infirmities" I believe it said, and disappeared from the records a few years afterward. And Henry married Rebecca Smith in Bourbon County in 1797. (He is called Gettings in the body of the bond, but signed Gitthens).
