Hello Bob,
I have just obtained a copy of the will of Thomas Gleaves written and probated in
1740. It mentions his wife as Hannah, but
the researcher that obtained the will
concludes Ann/Hannah are probably the same
person. As you mentioned, it leaves 150
pounds to Matthew "at age 21 years". This
would mean he was born no earlier than
1720. Therefore , your estimate of his
arrival in Penn. in 1945 should be correct.
He would probably have inherited the 150
pounds by then.
The reseacher also concluded that the
Gleaves family was probably non-conformist,
due to lack of extensive church records and
marriages by license. This would agree with
your conclusion that they were not Presbyterian.
Researchers in Cambridge say that most
people going to America during that period
left from Liverpool, England. However, I
have continued to check the shipping lists
and nothing with his name has appeared yet.
I wonder if Matthew could have come as an
apprentice to someone and under that persons
name or family. Also, a lot of people came
by way of the West Indies, then to America.
The mystery continues.
Bill Gleaves
