Hello Kim,I don't know if this will help but decided to put this letter on the "net" and maybe it will help someone. It is from a Mrs Lawrence George from Dallas, Texas.Written May 28, 1979.It goes:
My father's name was Wesley Elonidas Gleaves, born in Tennessee, near Nashville, on July 11, 1868, and his father's name was John Robert Gleaves, born in Tennessee in 1825, served in the Confederate Army, a Corporal, 38 Reg., Tenn. Inf., died in 1901.
My father's mother died when he was six years old and the family moved to Texas when he was nine years old.My grandfather had several children by his first wife, who lived in Tennessee, one of whom was named Monroe Gleaves.
My father had several brothers, Samuel, William, Ceil, all of whom have passed away.I had a friend of mine who went to London, England and looked in the telephone directory there from which place I understand the "Gleaves" migrated and she just tore out a whole page from the directory and brought it to me.I have never tried to trace the family but sorry I did not learn more from my father and other members of the family before they passed away.
I have just called a cousin of mine here in Dallas and she remembers that there is a Joe Gleaves and two of his sisters who live in Fort Worth, Texas and they are children fo the Monore Gleaves mentioned above. However after checking a Ft. Worth Telephone directory I failed to find a listing of Joe Gleaves.Sorry I can't help you more.
