They left Greetland in Halifax, West Yorkshire and went to Mossley in Lancashire early 1900s.They had some connections in this area which is very close to Oldham, so there could well be a Gledhill connection if you are stuck. We are at 1777 in Yorkshire, probably Scammonden, Huddersfield or the Elland area in Halifax!
At one time the only way to trace family with DNA was the male Y-DNA direct line and female mtDNA direct line. There is now autosomal DNA that can trace up to 4th cousin and beyond. This is regardless of being male or female!
familytreedna.com have an excellent price for their 'Family Finder' test: $99 (UK £61) and they even 'throw in' a $100 restaurant gift voucher for U.S. orders.
I know that the biggest worry is not cost, it is privacy especially if you don't know anybody who has taken DNA tests and what is involved.
