It’s great to hear from you, but I am afraid that I have not been able to get back any further from William Glennie and Barbara Reid.
I am descended from their daughter Janet Glennie who married John Riach.I also have some information regarding another of their children, Alexander Glennie, whose second marriage was to another family connection.
Barbara Riach, daughter of Janet Glennie and John Riach, married James Coutts.James had a sister Jean Coutts.
Alexander Glennie was first married to Isobel Glennie (I haven‘t figured out where she fits in) and had two children with her, a girl who died aged 5 and a son Alexander who appears to have been an epileptic. Some time after her death, he married Jean Coutts, the sister of his niece Barbara’s husband. How’s that for a tangle?
James Coutts and Barbara Riach farmed at Sinnaboth, Towie, and had 5 children there.By the 1851 census, James Coutts had died and the main Sinnaboth house was occupied by Barbara (Riach) Coutts and her children.Alexander Glennie had died and Jean Coutts was living in another cottage at Sinnaboth, Towie with her stepson Alexander.
On Barbara’s death her son, also James Coutts, took over the farm.He eventually moved to a smaller property (probably as he got older) and the Sinnaboth farm was taken over by Mary Glennie and her husband Charles Beattie.
Perhaps the extended family kept in touch over the generations - Mary Glennie was the second cousin of James Coutts’ mother Barbara Riach so, when he moved to a smaller farm, perhaps he looked around the family for someone who wanted the chance at a bigger tenancy.Sinnaboth was 60 acres, I think I looked and found that Charles Beattie had previously farmed 40 acres.
