Because my surname is Goepel and because it is not a common name, I'm interested in finding families that have come to North America from either Germany or England.
In what I have found so far there are pockets of Goepels on this continent -- British Columbia, New York / New Jersey, Wisconsin, Iowa, and California.
My line of Goepels came to New York in the 1930's from Germany with my grandfather (Frederick Wilhelm). But I know that he had a brother Willi (Wilhelm) that remained in Germany and possibly other siblings or family.
This family came from Ketschendorf bei Coburg.
I also know that when I was in college in California, I met an Elizabeth Goepel from Connecticut who was part of another Goepel family.
And there was a Steven Goepel from New Jersey (he played football for Colgate University in the 1960's) who was part of another Goepel family.
My father always said that the name had an umlaut at one time, so I'd also be interested in when Göpel changed to Goepel, because it appears to have occurred in Germany and not as part of immigrants Anglicizing the name.
So, I'd like to trade information with any Goepel researcher no matter how little information you may have.
