As so many Jews did after leaving Russia around 1903, my Grandparents refused to talk about where they came from.We had family rumors of name changes and about whether there was ever a marriage between them. We heard that one of their last names may have been Gilbert, perhaps his, and that he took her name when coming to the US. We just don't know.
Is there anyone out there researching GOLDBERG families from the Ukraine that might have the following people in their tree?
Rubin Goldberg (or possibly Gilbert or a variation) Born 15APRIL1881 in area around Kolk or Gorodok, Russia per his Application for Naturalization paper, but the ship he said he came in on was not yet in service the year he came so I don't know the validity of the info I have.
Hannah or Anna R.Goldberg ,Born 15DEC1889 in Russia. or named Gilbert or a variation)
They bore one son in Russia: Leo Goldberg, 01MAY1902, then Rubin emigrated to Milwaukee, WI via Philadelphia,PA. Anna followed later. They then had the following children born in the US: Louis Goldberg b. 15JUNE1908 Philadelphia,PA, Montgomery Cnty Hyman Goldberg b. 10DEC1909 Racine, WI Sidney Goldberg b. 02AUG1910 Racine, WI Mary Goldberg b. 15APRIL1914 Milwaukee, WI Isidor Goldberg b. 14JAN1916 Milwaukee, WI Meyer Goldberg b. 10OCT1917 Milwaukee, WI
Rubin Goldberg died in Milwaukee, 11April1931. Anna R. Goldberg died 30Sept1971 in LA, CA, but is buried in Milwaukee,WI (in an Orthodox, family cemetery here)
I have some added info on the children and their families, including several names shortened to BERG post-WWII, but have never been able to go back beyond my grandparents.
Can anyone help? Thank you, Carolyn (Goldberg/Berg) Rutherford, Milwaukee, WI Daughter of Meyer & Audrey, Granddaughter of Rubin & Anna.
