Mary (Polly) Goldsberry was born about 1795 in Virginia, daughter of Benjamin Goldsberry.
She married Francis Hamilton Speaks on 6 February 1812 in Ross County, Ohio.He was born 18 November 1782, son of William Speake and Mary Haislip.
Mary and Francis had at least two children:Samuel Speaks, born about 1817 in Ohio, and married (1) Julia Ann Lemay and (2) Eleanor Lane;and, Elizabeth Speaks, born 14 April 1822 in Ohio, and married Christopher Hanawalt.
Mary (nee Goldsberry) Speaks died 3 February 1879 and is buried in the Old Methodist Cemetery at Frankfort, Ross County, Ohio.Her husband, Francis Hamilton Speaks, died in 1840 near Harpers Ferry in what is now Jefferson County, West Virginia, and he is buried there.
Francis Hamilton Speaks served in the War of 1812 as a Private in Captain Andrew Hemphill's Company of the Ohio Militia.
Francis Hamilton Speaks and his family appear in the 1820, 1830, and 1840 Federal Censuses for Concord Township, Ross County, Ohio.After Francis died Mary lived with her daughter, Elizabeth, and she appears in the 1850, 1860, and 1870 Federal Censuses for Concord Township, Ross County, Ohio, living in the household of her son-in-law, Christopher Hanawalt.
