George & Dora Frey Goldstein - Carroll St., Brooklyn
Dear All:
I am tracing the family of my husband, David Shiff.
His ancestor was Joseph Schiff, who came to the US in September 1846 aboard the packet ship, SS Oneida, along with his wife Celia and six children.
One of the six children was Angeline Schiff, who married Abraham Frey in the 1860s.He died during the 1870s, and the 1880 US Census shows her running a deli to feed her four children.
One of her children was Dorothe, named after her aunt Dorothe. Her nickname, which she used her entire life, was DORA.
Dora marriedGEORG GOLDSTEIN, who was born in Germany and who came to the US as a steerage passenger on the SS Lessing of the Hamburg-America Line, arriving in New York on 14 Aug 1883.A passport application listed the name ofhis father as SIMON GOLDSTEIN.George traveled to American alone; he was 22 and listed as a 'merchant.'Once in NYC, George worked first as a bartender, then he became a cloak manufacturer.By 1910, he was a silk merchant.
Dora and George's only child was a son named ABRAHAM GOLDSTEIN, who was born in March 1888.ABRAHAM later married FLORENCE SCHULEIN (?), who was born in Osweggo, Michigan. Her mother's name was Bella, who was born in NY.
By 1920, Abraham was running the silk business, while his parents began to travel with great frequency to Europe. They even lived in Europe for a time.
Abraham and Florence's only child was a daughter, CECILE GOLDSTEIN, who was born in Brooklyn on 15 July 1915.
By 1930, Abraham listed himself as a linen merchant.I don't know whether this means that the silk business had failed during the Great Depression.
I would love to have more information about this family.
Kindest regards,
Cathleen Cody Shiff
