I am tracing our family tree, and of course found my Gollan connection.Anyway I think we might be connected. It needs to be looked at and confirmed, because, as always nothing is staight forward and easy, its an indirect/direct connection.
I'll try to explain....
Looking up my ancester Ann Gollan b. abt. 1802 died 1871, and her details I found on her death Cert that parents were Thomas Gollan and Janet McKay. That was easy. Her brother William, b. abt 1796 d. 1878 marked X at next of kin.
On Williams death cert (died single) parents are listed as Thomas Gollan and MARY MCKENZIE.OK second marriage birth for Ann.Still ok.Witness: Thomas McDonald, nephew, confirms that this is correct William. (Ann married Donald McDonald).
Now, looking for info on Thomas McDonald d. 1904, I found his death cert which lists witness as Thomas Gollan, cousin, Conon Bridge.
So begins another chase back up the family line.To cut a long story short....
Roderick Gollan - Crofter M. Mary Chisholm - Donald - George Gollan (shoemaker)m. Isabella Innes (died Conon Villiage) - Isabel - Christina - John Gollan - Thomas Gollan m Grace McCheyne (died at Conon bridge) (witness to T. Mc's death) - James Gollan - George Ross - Mary P T
From what I can gather Conon Bridge was not a big place and I could only locate the one Thomas Gollan there in the census returns around the time of Thomas McDonalds death, so I am assuming that this Thomas above is the Thomas Gollan that was referred to as a cousin on Thomas McDonalds death cert.
As for the cousin connection, I can only guess that Roderick must be the brother of either Ann, or her father Thomas.... Any ideas? Jackie Garvin
