Leilani is my first cousin and our grandfather(paternal side) was Francisco Gomes from Calheta Madeira. The family nick name was Gomes Cibola. The immigrated from Madeira On the ship the "Bordeau" in 1884. Francisco's parents were Francisco Gomes and Maria de Conceicao Jardim of Calheta. But I also have a maternal great grandfather named Francisco Gomes, who was married to Julia de Jesus De Freitas, and both were from Funchal, Madeira and immigrated to the Hawaiian Islands on the ship the City of Paris in 1884. The family nickname was Gomes Barba Loira. Francisco's parents were Joao Gomes "Broega" and Joaquina Maria Rodrigues from Madeira. I have traced both families back about 400 years and neither are related so far! They seemed to have stayed in the same area for 100s of years...until the big move to Hawaii, where my parents were born. The both migrated to California and met in Santa Clara where they married on February 19, 1927. My mother, Eva Gomes will be 90 this February.
