OBIT-Joseph Augustus Goodhue, Jr., 95, Son of Jos. A and Nora [Velte] Goodhue
Joseph Augustus Goodhue, Jr., 95 years old, passed away at home on Wednesday April 14, 2010. He was the son of the late Nora (Velte) Goodhue and the late Joseph A Goodhue, Sr. and husband of the late Kathleen K. (Kelly) Goodhue.
He is survived by his 2 daughters, Penny Ricci of Johnston, Rhode Island and Lynda Bowen and husband Ronald Bowen of Leominster; 6 granddaughters, 1 great granddaughter, 6 great grandsons and several nieces and nephews. He also leaves his 2 sisters-in-law, June Goodhue of North Kingston, Rhode Island and Betty Goodhue of Georgetown, Maine. Mr. Goodhue was predeceased by his 2 brothers, William and Charles Goodhue, and a sister, Kathryn Moore.
Mr. Goodhue was born in Leominster on June 16, 1914 and had lived in Leominster his entire life. He was an alumni of Leominster High School where he had played football. He graduated from Worcester Academy, Wharton School of Finance at University of Pennsylvania, and attended Springfield College. Mr. Goodhue worked his way through college running a day camp for boys & girls located on Spec Pond in Lancaster.
Mr. Goodhue was self employed most of his working life and had owned many businesses. He owned and operated Goodhue's Restaurant and Bakery located on Main Street in Leominster. In 1948, he started a marine business first selling piers and floats, then later added sailfish & sunfish. In 1949, Mr. Goodhue started a frozen bread dough factory and also Kitchen Window. During this time, he also had a 15 sailboat rental business located on Cape Cod and the Four Wind Cabins & Sailboat Rental in Laconia, NH. For a period of time, he had worked for the Campbell Soup Co. and had been a consultant for Mrs. Paul's Frozen Foods.
Mr. Goodhue was a member of Ducks Unlimited, Orchard Hills Athletic Club, Leominster Rotary Club and was Vice President of Chamber of Commerce in Leominster. He was a supporter of the Leominster Historical Society and donated a merry-go-round horse from the former Whalom Park.
Mr. Goodhue had accomplished and reached many goals during his 95 years of life. However, his most accomplished and the one he was the proudest of, was that of becoming an Eagle Scout.
Funeral services will be held from the funeral home on Monday, April 19, 2010, at 10 AM in St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 60 West St., Leominster. Burial will be at the convenience of the family at a later time. Calling hours will be held on Sunday evening, April 18, 2010 from 5-8 PM in the Silas F.
