Hallo!Very good information good to know about our families.
Gorgas family members that migrated from Barcelona, Spain to Holland and later on to America in 1600's - many kept Spanish as their primary/or second language. For Brigadier General Josiah Gorgas, it was very important for him and the Confederacy during the U. S. Civil War - since he was able to recruit his cousin from Spain to help to equip the South with weapons, gunpodwer and ammunition.
BG Josiah Gorgas' son, Dr. William Crawford Gorgas, was stationed in Havana,Cuba during the Spanish American War.He spoke fluent Spanish and was able to teach the local population in Spanish howto combat the diseases, malaria and yellow fever, caused by the mosquitoes.
In Panama, again Doctor William Crawford Gorgas, with a staff that mostly spoke Spanish, he was able to lead them in theeradication of the yellow fever and malaria caused the mosquitos, thus, helping with the construction of the Panama Canal.
Although, some of the Gorgases came to America for religious freedom, most came to the New World for business purposes, they were merchants, enterpreneours, and of course farming. Marcus Gorgas .
