I am looking for more information about Ferris Gorgas and his wife Mary Crowley. They were my second great grandparents. Ferris was born in IL according to a researcher friend of mine (and according to the US Census), and he died ca 1897 (I don't know where). Mary was born in Ireland and died also ca 1897. Apparently this couple died young and left several kids in an orphanage by 1900. I believe their children were: Chester Arthur, Grace Edna, Edward Ferris, Catherine, John W., Walter, May, and Charles. It is possible that Catherine and May were the same person, one being a middle name, I'm not sure. "May" was said to die in childbirth, and nothing is known of Catherine. Chester Arthur Gorgas, my great grandfather, married Mary Emma Slaven on 11 Dec 1911 in Pittsburg, PA. He worked in a Steel Mill, as an Electrician, and also played baseball in Pittsburg (not sure at what level). He was born 4 Aug 1885 in Rochester, Beaver County, PA, and died 5 May 1970 in Santa Ana, CA. Mary Emma Slaven (daughter of Andrew Slaven and Mary Margaret "Olive" Cole, was born 20 Nov 1885 in Struthers, OH and died 15 Aug 1962 in same place. Their children were Mary Olive Jean (who married a John "Harold" Crawford from Youngstown, OH on 13 Jan 1929), Jessie Mae, Chester Arthur Jr., Virginia Louise (my grandmother), Emma Margeurite and Elma Isabelle (twins, but Emma died when she was born), Arthur Chester "Bud", William Norman, Lloyd Edward, and Robert Eugene.
It has been long rumored by my branch and other branches of the family that Ferris was in some way related to William Crawford Gorgas (who is discussed many times on these boards). Clearly he's not a descendant. I've checked the descendants of Josiah Gorgas, and beside William Crawford Gorgas he only had one son, Richard Haynsworth Gorgas, who apparently never married. So I have to go out another level and look at the brothers of Josiah Gorgas: Thomas, Jacob, William, Charles, and Solomon. Could any of these have had a son named Ferris?
