Hello Susan – thank you for your reply.It’s quite difficult to know exactly how it all fits together.My family did not leave Germany until the 1880s and it appears your ancestors left for the USA around the 1850s, correct?We also know Lina's father's name was Johann Gottfried GOERKE.
However, I have found an interesting website constructed by Helmut Goerke in Germany which chronicles the GOERKE family history.Your family link may be in there.It is, however, in German.I was going to write to him.Follow the link http://www.nyoka.dehttp://www.nyoka.de / GOERKE Familienchronik.For example, Helmut notes that there were many people with the surname Goerke or nearest equivalent (eg Goercke, Goehrke, Gehrke, Gercke, Gerke, Göhrke, Gergens, Gerge, Gergen) around this time in the north-eastern part of Germany.Goerke (Görke) became the standard spelling as from 1772 when education was compulsory.
