Janet Murdoch/k m before 1761 to Robert Gracey of Comber, Co Down. Does anyone know more about my Gt Gt Gt Grandmother Janet Gracey nee Murdoch? I would be very pleased to have any information including her parents, her birth and place, her marriage and place, her death and burial place. The MURDOCH family living in the Comber area then, was probably as follows:- Patrick Murdoch/k b abt 1690 m abt 1719 Sarah Orr. 1. James Murdoch b abt 1719 Comber m abt 1749 Margaret Orr dau of John Orr. James d Comber. 1.1 Elizabeth Murdoch b abt 1749 Comber [d Granshaw Mills Moneyreagh 1837]m abt 1771 James Lamont. 1.2 John Murdoch b abt 1751. 1.3 Agnes (Nancy) Murdoch b abt 1753 Comber [d Granshaw] m William Lamont abt 1775 at Ballykeel. 2. William Murdoch b 1720 Comber [marriage not yet found] d 1805 Comber. 3. Sarah b 1722 d Knockshane, Shankill. Could Janet be a latter child in this Comber family? Source for the above:- Ros Davies website, http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~rosdavies/http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~rosdavies/ Ros used a source book Ray A. Jones ‘Descendants of James ORR of Scotland -1607 onwards’ Lib of Congress 1977. If anyone wants to also check what sounds like another edition of the book is ‘Ulster Pedigrees: Descendants, in Many Lines of James ORR and Janet McCLEMENT, Who Emigrated from Scotland to Northern Ireland ca. 1607’ by Ray A. Jones. Or check another title is William ORR of Ireland, Pennsylvania, and Kentucky and his Descendants by Paul J. Ostendorf. There were several other Murdochs living at this time eg www.familysearch.com gives a Janet Murdoch b abt 1732 Killyleagh married 30 NOV 1753 James McDowell at Killyleagh First Presbyterian, Killyleagh, Down, Ireland, another earlier Murdoch family at Lisnaree Co Down ie just south of Banbridge, or another Lisnaree 7 miles NE of Newry. Then there were more Murdochs in Co Antrim, etc.
The GRACEY family in the area then was my Gt Gt Gt Grandfather Robert Gracey, Janet’s husband, who is believed to be the same tenant farmer on a Ballyaltikilligan map D654/M/41/1 surveyed 1749,and kept in the Londonderry Estate Papers, PRONI, Belfast. That Robert Gracey in the lease No 11 dated 9 Nov 1761 is on plot no 85 also in the PRONI. It is his wife Janet Gracy otherwise Murdoch that is named on the 1761 lease. That Robert Gracey is also believed to be the same as in rentbooks for 1775, 1785, 1792, 1795. Our Gracey was known as Stoney Brae Farm. A widow Gracey was buried 30th April 1759, My uncle thought this was Robert’s mother, but it could be his grandmother. Another Widow Gracey lived on his east side, closer to Comber., her 1791 tenancy? It is unclear to me, on a map as to whether the home was previously her husband or possibly Murdoch. So who was this 2nd widow Gracey? was she Robert’s mother. Both these tenancies were on the south side of the old Lisburn road now Glen Road/Glenside. On the north side facing them in 1786 was the adjoining tenancies of Robert’s younger brother Thomas Gracey b abt 1728, [My uncle thought abt 1736] as a farmer he signed himself as Greey or Grecy, who m and had 1.1. ‘a child’ 1 Feb 1766 who might be James Gracey b abt 1759 signing as Grecey, who was a Weaver in 1786. Robert and Janet Gracey’s children were 1.1 ‘a child’ 29 Jan 1766, 1.2 my Gt Gt grandfather William Gracey b 1768/9-d1840, 1.3 ‘a child’ 7 Apr 1770. It is Robert’s grandfather, who is part of the family legend fleeing SE Scotland 1688, served in the seige of Londonderry 1690, who settles soon after in Ballyaltikilligan, with a younger brother with similar story, settling in Lurgan. Thomas Gracey maybe the link with the John Gracey m Martha Mckee, Killinchy line. The Killinchy line is not my forte, see Diane Goodfair, Clifford Gracey, Alec Stockwell-Stephenson and more elswhere. Any other information on the Graceys of Comber welcomed, particularly Ballystockart townland, and the adjoining southern parish of Killinchy, with lots to offer in return. Sources my uncle Commander James Whitla Gracey [1884-1969]’s archive searched 2004, inc bmd from St Mary’s C of I Comber registers, my correspondence with him 1962 re PRONI Londonderry Estate Papers etc inc my note on Janet Gracy otherwise Murdoch. Many thanks for any interest and help, Jim
