Tom, your past assumptions are not wrong, the name is principally a protestant one in Ireland as witnessed in census and other records eg the Ulster Solemn League and Covenant 1912 on PRONI. Growing up in Belfast, I became aware of having an Ulster-Scot background. This is not apparently the same as Scotch-Irish.In Scotland I don’t know the breakdown of the surnames by religions in census etc.Alongside the earliest Gracey Gracie and Gracy references, the Grace surname existed in early County Donegal, Belfast etc, but it was the much older Irish family based in Kilkenny that you mention.I have read that old rare Grace book years ago, but more recently on a Grace website, their interest is also in DNA checking for a specific Grace combo. I don’t want to volunteer myself! In Co. Down there is an early graveyard tombstone recording a Gracey as Grace. But I haven’t read of any Gracey, Gracie Gracy getting a DNA connection to the Grace DNA bank. I gradually found too many other factors united the Gracey Gracie Gracy, and so dropped my Grace research other than worrying of it cropping up as an occasional misspelling for those names.
Having found many Gracy in my research I do wish you could be tempted to share what you know of say just your earliest Gracy relation.Your connection to Ireland or Scotland might exist. I'm starting to quess it’s north american? Probably USA.I’m sure others would help on this forum as well. An associated place before 1920 or earlier, might start me off, earlier would be much better. If you prefer to mail privately, please do so.I live in Cambridge England so I am limited in my research opportunities. In the meantime I’m back to Gracey. Best regards Jim.
