Dear Maurice~ Thank you for such a comprehensive answer to my query. Our Thomas Gragg 1794/5 first appears in the 1830 census for Cocke County, TN, house #244. In 1840, he is in Cocke County on census page 262. In 1850, he is in Greene County, TN, house #1098. He is shown with his wife, Elizabeth (and kids). Elizabeth is our gr-gr-gr-grandmother "Betsy" McMurtrey. We have the names of Thomas and Betsy from our Gr-grandmother, Hester Ann Gragg, who married an Ownbey. In 1850 Thomas and Betsy have a son, Samuel, born 1833. Next door you can see Wyatt Holt and his 2nd wife, Mary, whom we know is "Polly" Boleypaw - also provided by Hester Gragg. Wyatt and Mary have a daughter, Mahala, seen in the 1850 census as Aly b. 1834. Samuel Gragg 1833 married Mahala Holt 1834 and one of their daughters was Hester Gragg, our gr-grandmother. We would dearly love to place Thomas Gragg 1794/5 in the correct branch of the Gragg tree. He married a McMurtrey girl and shows up near sons of Wm. Gragg and Anna Smart - those boys also married McMurtry girls - but Thomas does not appear in the church and cemetary records for that family. Thomas 1794/5 also shows up in proximity to Marshall Gragg 1807 (son of John Gragg and Hannah Piercy). Although both families seem always near one another, we are leaning toward trying to place Thomas with John and Hannah. Since the TN records are so sparse, our only hope now is to find someone to whom family history has been handed down. Your information was very helpful, especially the part about the Porters. Our Ownbey line has many Porters and we may come full circle one of these days.
Let me know if you think I might have any other leads for you. C.
