How did Graybeals get to Oregon?
I found this on a facebook page titled "I'm a Graybeal" and I know that this line didn't originate in Oregon, but I wanted to post it because I liked it and I want to know the WV/NC link.
This is from a Spencer Graybeal Childs(his mom is a Graybeal)and he wrote:
"I'm pretty sure that the name Graybeal is one of the coolest names that has ever graced this wonderful planet of ours. The origin of my Graybeal (well, as far as I know it...) is in the great state of Oregon. I'm aware of four generations, mostly centralized in a town in Eastern Oregon called Pendleton. My mom is a Graybeal, who was born in Pendleton. Her father was Gerald (Jay) Graybeal. He played football for the University of Oregon and is now in the athletic hall of fame at the University. He placed 9th in the Heisman Trophy race in 1939 and then was drafted the very same year by the Washington Redskins. He declined and chose to move back to his hometown of Pendleton. He married his high school sweetheart and started a successful beer distributing company, Graybeal Distributing, which is still family owned today."
I got this off of Oregon Quarterly Class Notes:
"Famed UO halfback Gerald “Jay” Graybeal ’41 died in October 2008 at age ninety-one. A member of Alpha Tau Omega, Graybeal served as a marine in the South Pacific during World War II. After the war, Graybeal settled in his hometown of Pendleton. He remained active all his life, playing golf several days a week until age eighty-eight."
Anyone have info?
